Beit Midrash

Beit Midrash (in-person & on Zoom)

When

November 6, 2021
9:00 am - 10:15 am

In Beit Midrash (which means House of Study) we will take an in-depth approach to Jewish Study with a special focus on Israel. We’ll look at texts, ancient and modern, to understand the land, people, and modern State of Israel. From the earlier Zionists to contemporary commentators, we’ll test ideas against the values of our Torah to help us refine our own thinking about Israel’s place in the 21st century Jewish landscape. In other words, we will explore the most important Jewish ideas we’re wrestling with today.

Taught by Rabbi Goldsmith and a special guest or two, the course will meet approximately twice a month on Saturday and Sunday mornings. On Sundays, we will look at these issues through historical, sociological, and demographic lenses. On Shabbat mornings, we will strive to understand these ideas through study of our sacred texts – linking contemporary texts to our years long practice of Shabbat morning Torah study at Emanu-El. Each session will stand on its own – thus attendance at every session is not required. But, of course, attending more sessions will help you acquire greater depth of understanding and breadth of context. For more information, contact Rabbi Goldsmith.
